What size snowboard do I need?
A size chart in kilograms, a quick calculator, and the boards in your size that Australian shops actually have in stock. Prices checked 22 Oct 2026.
Snowboard size calculator
Put in your weight (and height if you like), pick how you ride, and we'll show a length range plus in-stock boards that come in it.
Enter your weight to see a size range and boards in that size.
A rule of thumb, not a brand chart. Boot size, ability and the board's shape all matter, so check the brand's own size chart before you buy.
Snowboard size chart by weight (kg)
These ranges are for an all-mountain board, the kind most people learn on and ride around Australian resorts. For a park board knock off about 3 cm; for a powder board add about 3 cm. The last two columns come from today's prices across 15 Australian shops.

General guide only, not any brand's official chart. "In stock" means the shop lists the board as available with at least one length in that range.
Why weight matters more than height
A snowboard is a spring. When you stand on it, your weight bends it into the snow, and that flex is what lets it turn, hold an edge and float. Too long for your weight and it feels stiff and hard to steer; too short and it gets washy at speed and sinks in soft snow. That's why brand charts are built around weight, and why we put kg first.
Height still helps as a sanity check. Stand the board on its tail: most people's right size lands between their chin and nose. If you're tall and light, or short and solid, trust the weight number.
Adjust for how you ride
- Learning or all-mountain: the middle of your range. On firm, groomed Aussie snow at places like Perisher, Thredbo and Hotham, a mid-length all-mountain board is the easy choice.
- Park and freestyle: a few cm shorter is easier to spin, press and land switch. See park and freestyle boards.
- Powder: if you're planning a Japan or backcountry trip, a few cm longer (or a wider, setback shape) helps you float. See powder boards.
- Heavier for your height, or an aggressive rider: lean to the top of the range. Lighter or more cautious: lean shorter.
Boot size and wide boards
Length is only half of it. If your boots hang too far over the edges, your toes or heels catch the snow when you lean into a turn. As a rough guide, riders in about US men's 11 and up often need a wide board, but it depends on the board's waist width and your bindings, so check the brand's chart.
Today there are 104 wide boards in stock at Australian shops, from 5th Element Nightfall at $399.99. Browse all wide snowboards.
Women's and kids' sizing
Women's boards usually run shorter, with narrower waists and a softer flex for lighter riders and smaller boots. The weight ranges above still work. There are 195 boards listed as women's in stock today, starting at $379.99 for the 540 Whitedeck. See women's snowboards.
For kids, go by weight too, and lean shorter so the board is easy to turn. Kids grow fast, but a board that's too long makes learning much harder, so don't size up more than a few cm. We're tracking 70 kids' boards in stock, from $249.99 for the Burton Riglet. See kids snowboards.
Check the brand's chart, then compare prices
Every brand sizes a little differently, and the same length can ride bigger or smaller depending on the board's shape and profile. Use this guide to narrow it down, check the brand's chart on the board page, then compare what each Australian shop is charging. Snowboard sizing: questions
- What size snowboard do I need?
- Start with your weight. As a rough guide, a 65–75 kg rider usually looks at about 150–157 cm and a 75–85 kg rider at about 154–160 cm for an all-mountain board. Then adjust for style: a few cm shorter for park, a few cm longer for powder. Always check the brand's own chart for the exact board.
- Should I size my snowboard by height or weight?
- Weight. A board flexes under your weight, so weight decides how it rides. Height is a handy cross-check: stood on its tail, most boards in the right range reach somewhere between your chin and nose. If the two disagree, go by weight.
- What size snowboard should a beginner get?
- Pick a length in the middle or lower half of your weight range. A slightly shorter, softer board is easier to turn at low speed, which helps a lot on your first days at Perisher, Thredbo, Falls Creek or Mt Buller.
- When do I need a wide snowboard?
- If your boots hang too far over the edges, your toes or heels drag in turns. As a rough guide, riders in about US men's 11 and up often need a wide board, but it depends on the board's waist width and your bindings, so check the brand's chart.
- Are women's snowboard sizes different?
- Women's boards usually come in shorter lengths with narrower waists and a softer flex, made for lighter riders with smaller boots. The weight ranges still apply, and plenty of women ride unisex boards in the right size.
- How do you know which boards are in my size?
- We read 15 Australian shops' product pages once a day and record the lengths each shop lists for every board. The calculator shows in-stock boards that list a length in your range, 544 boards in total today. Check the shop's page for the exact sizes left before you buy.
